Installing SPS Service Pack 2 Causes Accelerator MMC SnapIn To Disappear

Symptoms:

Note:  For Accelerator to operate properly on an SPS 2001 SP2 server, Accelerator V1.2 is required. Accelerator V1.2 will run properly on an SPS 2001 SP1 server as well.  See http://metoliussoftware.com for V1.2 information.

If Accelerator for SharePoint Portal Server 2001 is already installed on a server that is updated from SPS Service Pack 1 to SPS Service Pack 2, the Administrative MMC SnapIn for Accelerator will no longer show up in the standard SPS 2001 MMC Administration interface.

Note:  Installing Accelerator on a server with SPS SP2 already installed will not encounter this problem.

Versions affected:  All

Workaround:

It is not necessary to un-install Accelerator to correct this problem.  Rather, in order to restore the Accelerator Snapin, the extension .ocx simply needs to be re-registered.  To do this:

  1. Shut down any SPS 2001 MMC Administration instances
  2. Open a command window and navigate to the bin directory for Accelerator (usually c:\program files\metolius\accelerator\bin).
  3. Run regsvr32.exe against the file SPSAcc.ocx found there (i.e. regsvr32 spsacc.ocx).

A msgbox indicating success should pop up.

Subsequent use of the SPS MMC Administrative interface should now include the Accelerator snap-in extensions as usual.
